Turmeric is part of the ginger family and is also known as the yellow wonder. Michael Tierra, co-author of "The Way of Ayurvedic Herbs, " says turmeric contains strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties and is effective in small doses. Turmeric reduces inflammation of gum disease, allowing an individual the ability to brush the teeth more frequently with less irritation.

The seeds of the betel nut eliminate infection from the body, and is used in therapeutic Ayurvedic medicine. Betel nut, also known as areca, is bitter and full of astringent properties when the seeds are chewed. According to the "Sushruta Samhita, " one of two texts used in Ayurvedic medicine, betel nut guards against gum disease.
